Custom-Cut, Etched Floral Vase
Stenciled miniature flowers are framed inside freehand cut window frames. Each window was enhanced by painted scroll work. Nice example piece for those who want to take their etching one step farther.
Please Note: Etch Cream is not recommended for large solid areas. We did use Etch Cream for this project anyway because the vase was too big for use with Etch Bath. You will not get an even frosting, but it adds to the charm of the finished project. Try using a sea sponge instead of the foam brush if you want a more distressed look. Practice on a jar from the recycling first to see what the final results may look like.
Materials:

- Fancy edged scissors
- Letter folder, old credit card or metal spoon (tool)

- Paper towels
Directions:
- Wash vase thoroughly with hot soapy water. Rinse and dry
- Cut apart the miniature flower stencils from stencil sheet. Set aside.
- Using the fancy edged scissors, cut rectangles of vinyl masking roughly 1 1/2 x 2 inches and some squares 2x2 inches. Peel off the backing and apply to the vase, tilting them from side to side as shown in the picture. Place scrap paper over the vinyl and rub down with a tool
- Put on the gloves.Load the foam brush with Etch cream. Hold the flat side of the brush flat up against the side of the vase. PAT the cream on straight up and down in a random pattern until one side of the vase is covered in cream. DO NOT paint the cream on or your glass will look streaky and not nicely frosted. You can do smaller areas if your vase is very large and hard to manage by feathering out the cream that is left on the sponge so when you rinse and return to finish the process, there will not be any distinctive start-stop lines that you will notice. When you start again, apply the Etch Cream in the area where you feathered out the cream earlier.
- Leave the Etch Cream on for 5 minutes after you stopped applying it.
- With the vase upside down, rinse off all the cream under running water. Dry the vase well.
- Repeat the etching process until the vase is completely etched.
- Remove the vinyl patches. If there is any Etch Cream residue left behind, wipe it off with a damp paper towel. Wipe TOWARDS the frosted area and not over the clear window or you may permanently streak the glass.
- Center a miniature flower stencil in middle of each window. Hold it in place with some pieces of masking tape. Read the instructions that came with your stencil sheet. You can also view the How To Video HERE. . Rub down each flower with the popsicle stick until the stencil changes shades of blue and releases from the plastic cover sheet. Remove the plastic
- Cover all areas of clear glass still exposed after applying the stencils
- Pat Etch Cream on each stencil. Leave cream on for 2 minutes.
- Turn the vase upside down, rinse off the cream and the stencils under very warm running water until all is removed.
Decorating the vase:
Paint a frame around each patch, one inside the etched area and another on the frosted area. Loosely imitate the fancy scissor design, either in all one color or in different colors as we did. Paint some lines broken with little dots in the breaksArticle Posted: 03/16/2018 03:01:39 PM
